O'Neil auditioned for her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. She was able to advance to the top 100 round due to the fact that judges were awed with her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the Top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals as she fell to the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. This shocked the judges, and they advised that people decide for Melissa as one of the contestants with the greatest vocal abilities. O'Neil's performance was consistently good, that he never fell into the third place. Her performance on September 7 of 2005 was awe-inspiring that the judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially made public by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
